CLINICAL EVALUATION OF THE SAFETY AND EFFICACY OF INTRAVENOUS SODIUM VALPORATE (DEPAKINE^(¢ç)) INJECTION INNEUROSURGICAL PATIENTS.






Abstract
The safety and efficacy of intravenous Depakine were studied at the prevention of seizure in perioperative situation. Depakine, the active ingredient of which is sodium valproate (VPA), has a different chemistry than other previous or recent antiepileptic drugs. It is the only molecule which does not contain nitrogen.
Results were as follows
1). In 20 cases of patients, male were 8, female were 12 and there was difference in age group.
2) Patients were at risk of developing epilepsy after head injury or craniotomy.
3) The diagnosis were 9 cases of tumor, 6 cases of vascular disease, 5 cases of head trauma.
4) No patients showed epilepsy during the treatment.
5) There was no discernable side effects during medication.
In conclusion, Depakine seems to be effective and safe drug.
